Cameroon has ended Brazil’s run of  17 group-stage matches without defeat following a 1-0 win in their last group G game at the Lusail Stadium.

Captain Vincent Aboubakar’s stoppage-time header was the only goal of the game but the win was not enough to take the five-time African champions to the round of 16 as Switzerland beat Serbia to win the runner-up position.

Cameroon finished the game with 10 men following a second yellow card to Vincent Aboubakar for taking his shirt off during his goal celebration.

The boys of Rigobert Song knew the task was going to be tough against one of the tournament’s favourites Brazil as they hope to qualify for the round of 16 since 1990.

The lions had a composed game, as they blocked the spaces between the lines throughout the game – as Bryan Mbuemo’s header in the first half brought an outstanding save from Manchester City’s Ederson who was deputising for Liverpool keeper Alisson.

Brazil coach Tite made 10 changes from the team that won against Switzerland with Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli being the most outstanding throughout the game for Brazil. The 21-year-old had good chances in the game, to put his country in front, but Cameroon goalkeeper Devis Epassy produced great saves in the game as he earn the player of the match award.

Despite the defeat, the five-time World champions had already qualified for the round of 16 after winning their first two games. The Swiss join them in the round of 16 as runner-up following a 3-2 win over Serbia.
