Cameroon’s U18 Volleyball Dreams Hit a Snag, But the World Championship Road Isn’t Over Yet

Tuesday was a rough day for Cameroonian volleyball in Alexandria. Both the men’s and women’s U18 sides went into their semifinals with real belief, and both came out empty handed, missing the final and now facing a battle for third place, the last spot that still leads to the World Championship.

Nigeria proved too strong

Nigeria came out swinging from the first whistle, attacking with real intent and putting the Cameroonian defence under pressure almost immediately. The young Lions fought, there’s no question about that, but they spent most of the opening set chasing the scoreboard rather than setting the pace, and it showed. Nigeria took it 25-16.

The second set brought a bit more fight from Cameroon. Houmsou and his teammates pushed hard, looking to unsettle Nigeria’s rhythm, but it wasn’t quite enough. Nigeria closed it out 25-20.

By the third set, the pattern had repeated itself. Cameroon competed, but Nigeria’s composure told in the end, and the Super Eagles wrapped up the match 25-19.

A missing spark for the girls

For the women’s U18 side, the semifinal against Tunisia carried extra weight. Cameroon had lost 0 3 to Tunisia on the opening day of the group stage, so this was billed as a chance to put that right and book a place in the final.

It didn’t quite go to plan. Tunisia looked the sharper, more settled side from the start. Donald Nsounfon’s players seemed a touch hesitant, struggling to find their usual rhythm, and Tunisia made them pay early, taking the first set 25-17.

The Cameroonian bench pushed for a response in the second set, and for a while it worked. The girls controlled the opening stretch nicely before losing their shape in the closing stages. Tunisia snatched it 25-19.

There was a moment in the third set where it looked like the Lioncelles might finally find their spark. It didn’t last. Unforced errors crept back in, Tunisia pounced, and the set slipped away 25-15.

Eyes still on the World Championship

Two defeats in one afternoon is never easy to swallow, but there isn’t much time to dwell on it. This tournament was never just about the continental trophy or a place on the podium. The real prize sitting behind all of it is a spot at the U18 World Championship, and Alexandria is handing out three of those tickets to the competition’s best teams.

That’s exactly why Cameroon’s players and coaching staff have already put Tuesday behind them. Tuesday’s honest self-assessment wasn’t about dwelling on what went wrong. It was about pinpointing exactly where things slipped in both semifinals and working out how to be sharper, hungrier and more clinical when the classification matches come around.
