CHAN 2026: Cameroon Beat Ghana in Five-Set game, Set Up Algeria Revenge Clash

It took Cameroon two hours and fifty-one minutes to beat Ghana in Monday’s CHAN quarter-final clash in Tunis. The match went the full five sets, including a tie-break.

Cameroon made a flying start to the match and came out with set one 25-21 in 28 minutes with a start-up of Tanga, Brahim, Badawe, Voukeng, Nsangou and Bitouna. Ghana replied, winning 25-19 after a tie-break and 25-23 in a tense and tight 36-minute set three. Cameroon came back from 23-23 to win set four 25-23 and a tie-break 16-14.

It is Cameroon’s fourth win in the tournament, after defeating DR Congo 3-0, Central African Republic 3-0 and Rwanda 3-1 in the group stage.

They face Algeria in the semi-final on 23 September at 9pm Tunis and Douala time, following Algeria’s 3-2 win over Egypt in their quarter-final and their previous win over Cameroon in the last final. Host Tunisia face Morocco in the second semifinal fixture.

Middle blocker William Tanga said after the match: “The match was really, really intense. It was not an easy team to play with, they wanted to qualify too, so we had to show a lot of hunger, minimize our mistakes and be aggressive in the attack and at the block.”

Coach Patrice Ndaki said: “We are very happy but it was a difficult match since Ghana plays like us with lots of attackers. We gave heart and soul, it seems we had nothing else left. I told my players if we didn’t make it through, they need to enjoy themselves since we went behind at one point, I told them not to think too much about winning. Just think about enjoying and that’s what they did.

The tournament, which runs from 15 to 25 September will double as qualification for the 2027 World Championship and winners will earn a direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
