Qatar 2022: Africa is coming back to the fore – Walid Regragrui
Morocco made history to become the first African nation to reach the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup following their 1-0 win over Portugal in the quarter-final on Saturday.
Moroccan coach Walid Regragui expressed delight following the landmark victory over Christiano Ronaldo and co.
“We came across a very great team, once again. They have a lot of talent, but we maximized our chances. We managed to create a group with this state of mind: everyone fights, even those who come into play. We are happy, and the fans back us. Before the game, I told my players that we had to write history for Africa. It’s done and I’m very happy. Africa is coming back to the fore, ”Said Walid Regragrui.
Three African Nations (Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana) have made it to the quarterfinals but were unable to go beyond this stage.
Morocco became the fourth nation to qualify for the quarter-finals and wrote another history to become the first African and Arab nation to reach the semifinals.
Striker Youssef En-Nesyri scored only his third world cup goal – which became the winning goal of the game – leaping highest to beat goalkeeper Diogo Costa to score the goal that created history for the African continent.
Morocco plays defending champions France on Wednesday in the second semifinal match.
