U23 AFCON 2023: Gabon Reinstated After Successful Appeal.

Published on

Gabon has regained their spot in this year’s Under 23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco later this month, after their appeal was declared admissible by the CAF Appeal Committee.

Cameroon, which replaced Gabon after their disqualification, will not participate in the competition.

Gabon eliminated Cameroon by penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw during the qualifiers in Yaounde.

However, Cameroon filed a complaint against Gabon for irregularities in the registration of one of their players in the competition – with details of another player. Gabon was found guilty of the crime, and was disqualified from the competition.

The Gabon Football Federation filed an appeal to the CAF Appeal Committee – which was initially viewed as a sanctionable error, despite there being no intentional fraud.

The U23 national team of Gabon will regain their spot at the tournament, which doubles as qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

It should be noted that Cameroon has been given 10 days to appeal by the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

The Competition will take place in Morocco from June 24 to July 8, 2023.

Eight teams will participate in the competition of two groups with four teams each.

The top two teams of each pool will qualify for the knockout stage.

Gabon are in group B alongside Egypt, Mali and Niger and will play their first game against Mali on 25 June.
