YAOUNDE, CAMEROON – With bags packed and hopes high, Cameroon’s senior women’s volleyball team, the ‘Indomitable Lionesses’, departed for Bangkok, brimming with determination to make their mark on the 2025 FIVB World Championship.
After two months of intense preparation at the Japoma Multi-Sports Complex in Douala, Head Coach Paulo De Tarso Milagres has whittled his squad down to a final 14-player roster ready for the world championship. The delegation, led by Cameroon Volleyball Federation (Fecavolley) president Bello Bourdanne, knows the scale of the task ahead but is fuelled by a fierce desire to proudly represent the nation.
The team’s confidence is palpable from within the camp. Adiana Estelle Odile, a point hitter who plays for Volley Club Harnesien in France, provided an insight into the squad’s mood before their departure.
“The group is good. Everything is going very well, it’s good and there is a very good understanding between us. A very good atmosphere too,” Odile said. “We have prepared well for the competition even though it wasn’t easy at all. The preparation was really difficult but we have prepared well. We prepared for the competition in a good mindset, with joy and good humour. So, we are going to defend the colours of the country and give our best. Our ambition is to have a very good competition in the group and maintain good cohesion.”
A Continental Challenge on the World Stage
The FIVB World Championship isn’t just a test for Cameroon; it’s a key moment for African volleyball. Four nations – Egypt, Kenya, Algeria, and Cameroon – will carry the continent’s hopes in Thailand from August 22nd to September 7th, each aiming to prove that African teams can compete with the very best.
For the Indomitable Lionesses, the mission is clear, though the task is huge. They find themselves in the formidable Group H, a true “group of death” that includes world volleyball powerhouses Japan and Serbia, alongside a notoriously resilient Ukrainian side.
Who Are The 14 Cameroon’s Lionesses?
The final squad selected for the expedition is a blend of domestic talent and players gaining experience in European leagues.
The setters will be Ivana Nancy Agnoung Mbira (LTV) and Yolande Juliana Amana Guigolo (Amiens Longueau FC, FRA). The attack will be led by Brandy Gatcheu (LTV), Danna Fosso, and Joan Souohe Tchombe (both MKE).
In the middle, Paule Arielle Olomo (CV Voleibol Guia, POR) will be a key presence alongside Sourea Baran A Koung (LTV), Marie Belle Zambo (MKE), and Cécile Laure Nabyong (LTV). The offensive firepower will come from point hitters like the interviewed Adiana Estelle Odile (Volley Club Harnesien, FRA), alongside Andrea Mimosette Moussol (Stella Es Calais, FRA), and Carine Blamdaï (Sens Volleyball, FRA). The defensive duties fall to liberos Davina Ngameni (Seneca College, CAN) and Christelle Bilebel (NEK, HUN).
Africa’s Overwhelming World Championship Draw
The other African contenders face equally stern tests:
Egypt (Group A) must battle host nation Thailand, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
Reigning African champions Kenya, the ‘Malkia Strikers’, are in Group G alongside Poland, Germany, and Vietnam.
Algeria will equally have it tough in Group D, facing the USA, the Czech Republic, Argentina, and Slovenia.
While Africa has always played the last roles at these world championships, its continent’s representatives could well spring a few surprises.
