Race to Douala: CAVB Zone 4 African Club Champions Championship Kicks Off as Regional Rivals Arrive

From 21st November to 1st December, Cameroon’s economic capital will host the 11th edition of the CAVB Zone 4 African Club Champions Championship, bringing together the finest volleyball talent from across Central Africa.

The countdown has been ticking for weeks now, and the first delegations are making their entrance at the Douala International Airport, the city is already humming with anticipation.

The Cameroon Volleyball Federation (FECAVOLLEY) has pulled out all the stops as host nation, and early signs suggest this could be one of the most competitive editions yet. Home advantage will certainly matter for the Cameroonian sides, PAD and Litto Team, who’ll be playing on familiar territory. But they’ll face stiff opposition from a formidable lineup of regional powerhouses.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is arriving mob-handed, fielding four men’s teams: Espoir (making their ninth appearance, no less), Garde Républicaine, Service National, and the ever-dangerous Vita Club on the women’s side. Congo-Brazzaville’s DGSP will represent in both categories, whilst Gabon’s ASSOM GR rounds out what promises to be a fascinating competition.

Behind the scenes, the logistics have been something of a chess match. CAVB Zone 4 president Bello Bourdanne has been on the ground in Douala personally, making sure everything’s shipshape. Earlier this week, the executive committee held a marathon three-hour video conference to iron out the final details, from streaming equipment to accommodation, transport arrangements to the traditional veterans’ gathering that always adds a lovely touch to these events.

There’s also going to be a technical directors’ meeting scheduled with Otto Mbotto to discuss volleyball development across the sub-region, which speaks to the longer-term thinking behind these championships.

What makes this tournament special isn’t just the quality of volleyball on show, though that’s exceptional. It’s the sense of regional pride at stake. Central African volleyball has been in slumber for many years, and events like this are where reputations are made and broken. The atmosphere in Douala’s Japoma gymnasiums over the coming days will be absolutely crackling.

Come Friday, when the majority of delegations complete their arrival, the talking stops and the real business begins with the Technical meeting on Saturday, 22nd and the competition proper on 23rd of November.
