Yaoundé Set to Host Elite Badminton as 191 Players Chase Olympic Dreams

The Central African nation welcomes 191 shuttlers from 30 countries for upgraded tournament offering Olympic qualification points

Yaoundé is set to become the epicentre of international badminton as the Cameroonian capital prepares to host the sixth edition of the prestigious “Internationaux de Badminton du Cameroun” from 21-24 August 2025.

The tournament has achieved a significant milestone, earning Challenge Series status from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) with Grade III Level 1 classification – a testament to the event’s growing stature on the global stage.

Record-Breaking Participation Across Five Continents

This year’s edition has shattered previous records, attracting 191 players from 30 nations spanning all five continents. The Mfandena Gymnasium in the Omnisport district will witness fierce competition across five disciplines: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

The tournament’s elevation to Challenge Series status brings substantial rewards, with prize money jumping to $20,000 USD and 4,000 ranking points available for champions – a considerable increase that reflects the competition’s enhanced prestige.

Olympic Dreams Take Flight

Perhaps most significantly for competitors, the Cameroon Badminton Internationals now serve as a qualifying tournament for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This development transforms the event from a regional showcase into a crucial stepping stone for players with Olympic ambitions.

The participating nations represent badminton’s global reach, with Asian powerhouses including India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan bringing their renowned shuttling prowess to African soil. European nations such as France, Norway, and Italy will test themselves against emerging talents from across the continent.

Africa’s Badminton Renaissance

Host nation Cameroon leads the African contingent, joined by Equatorial Guinea, Uganda, Egypt, and Nigeria. This strong regional representation underscores badminton’s growing popularity across the continent and Cameroon’s position as a sporting hub in Central Africa.

From the Americas, the United States and Canada will compete alongside Oceania representatives Australia and the Cook Islands, making this truly a global gathering at the heart of Africa.

Challenge Series Status Marks New Era

The BWF’s recognition of the tournament as a Challenge Series event represents years of steady growth and organization. This classification places the Cameroon Badminton Internationals among the sport’s most sought-after continental competitions, offering players valuable ranking points and prize money that can make or break careers.

The four-day tournament with Olympic qualification on the line and substantial rewards up for grabs, expect nothing short of shuttlecock fireworks in Yaoundé.
