Cameroon’s rising volleyball stars have been given a heroes’ welcome after booking their spots at the World Championships, with both men’s and women’s U20 teams earning continental glory that has sent ripples of excitement through the nation’s sporting community.
The young Lions were honoured at a special ceremony on Tuesday at the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, where Sports Minister Professor Narcisse Mouelle Kombi praised their remarkable achievements at the recent U20 African Nations Volleyball Championships that just ended in Egypt a few days ago for the Men and earlier held in Cameroon this August for the women.
It’s been a whirlwind few months for Cameroon volleyball, and the celebrations were thoroughly deserved. Both squads didn’t just compete—they excelled, ending up silver medalists, securing their places on the world stage and proving that the country’s volleyball programme is hitting all the right notes.
World Stage Beckons
Minister Mouelle Kombi made it crystal clear that this is just the beginning. “Merit must be our guiding principle,” he declared, instructing the Cameroon Volleyball Federation (Fecavolley) to pull out all the stops in preparing for the upcoming World Championships. There’s certainly no time for the players to put their feet up.
Bello Bourdanne, President of Fecavolley and CAVB Zone 4, couldn’t hide his delight during the ceremony. “It’s an immense honour and joy to speak at this wonderful occasion,” he beamed, crediting President Paul Biya’s unwavering support for sport as a driving force behind Cameroon’s volleyball renaissance.
The federation chief was quick to acknowledge the broader picture, praising everyone from grassroots coaches to elite club presidents who’ve grafted tirelessly to build the foundations for these breakthrough performances. “These results are the fruits of relentless work from an entire chain of passionate actors,” Bourdanne noted.
Olympic Dreams and Continental Crowns
But this success has only whetted appetites for bigger prizes. Bourdanne laid out an ambitious roadmap : qualification for the 2028 and 2032 Olympics, plus continental titles at the senior level for both men and women.
“We’re conscious the road ahead is long, but a promising generation is already in place,” he explained. The president emphasised how these youngsters form the backbone of Cameroon’s national teams for the next decade—talented but still moldable.

The strategy involves ramping up support for training centres and extending preparation periods for national squads. Bourdanne gave special mention to ONIES, which manages the Japoma Sports Complex. The latter served as both training ground and home base for volleyball teams—a setup he hopes will continue given its world-class facilities.
Embracing the Digital Revolution
Perhaps most intriguingly, Bourdanne highlighted the need to revolutionise training methods by fully embracing technology in preparation and match analysis. He pointed to Egypt as the gold standard in African volleyball, noting its 15-year experience in this area.
The message was clear: future national team coaches will need to master these digital tools if they want to compete at the highest level. It’s a refreshingly modern approach that suggests Cameroon volleyball is serious about closing the gap with established powerhouses.
Recognition at the Highest Level
Minister Mouelle Kombi delivered his own rousing speech, passing on congratulations from President Biya himself, described as “Cameroon’s number one sports fan.” The minister emphasised how these achievements perfectly embody the head of state’s philosophy that there are “no minor sports” in Cameroon.
The ministry has pledged continued support for federations, with performance coefficients set to determine funding levels. Translation: deliver results, and the backing will follow.
As the volleyball community savours this moment of triumph, all eyes now turn to Africa’s Zone 4 volleyball Championships that kick off in a few days. These young Cameroonians have already shown they can mix it with Africa’s finest, and the selection of a few into Cameroon’s squad for the CAVB Zone 4 championship will be an ultimate test.
