Egypt Breaks Cameroonian Hearts in Thrilling U20 Volleyball Final

The dream run came to an end heartbreakingly for Cameroon’s young volleyballers as they succumbed to a tough Egyptian side in Saturday’s African Nations U20 volleyball Championship final in Cairo.

The U20 volleyball Indomitable Lions, who had swept through the tournament unbeaten with five straight victories, finally met their match against a fired-up Egyptian outfit boosted on by a passionate home crowd. The Egyptian supporters provided a wall of noise that made the difference, giving their team that crucial extra edge in front of their own fans. The hosts proved too strong, claiming a comprehensive 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-18, 25-22) to lift the continental crown.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Cameroonians, who had shown tremendous character throughout the competition but found themselves outgunned when it mattered most.

Despite the disappointment, there were individual honours to celebrate for the visitors. Adoum Idriss Ali earned recognition as the tournament’s standout middle blocker, while Bessong Ayuk-Taku was named best opposite in the competition’s dream team – a testament to Cameroon’s quality despite falling short of the ultimate prize.

Both finalists have secured their spots at next year’s World U21 Volleyball Championship, ensuring this talented Cameroonian generation will have another stage to showcase their talents on the global stage.

The result caps off a remarkable tournament for Cameroon, which achieved the extraordinary feat of reaching both the men’s and women’s U20 finals – the only African nation to manage such a double in 2025.

Much of the credit must go to Cameroon Volleyball Federation president Bello Bourdanne and his administration, whose grassroots vision is clearly bearing fruit. The CAVB Zone 4 president’s commitment to youth development is transforming the nation’s volleyball landscape, with these promising youngsters leading what appears to be a genuine renaissance in Cameroonian volleyball.

While Saturday’s final didn’t go their way, this promising generation has announced itself on the continental stage – and their journey is far from over.
