Three Nations Set for Pioneering Zone 4 Volleyball Championship in Brazzaville

The stage is set as the Republic of Congo hosts the inaugural CAVB Zone 4 Senior Volleyball Championship, a tournament that marks a fresh chapter for the sport in Central Africa.

After the preliminary formalities were put together, delegates gathered for the technical meeting on Sunday, with CAVB Zone 4 Secretary General Deris Meh taking charge alongside the competition control committee. Jean Claude Mopita, president of the Congolese Volleyball Federation, was also in attendance, keen to ensure his nation puts on a proper show as hosts.

In what’s being billed as an experimental first edition under the International Volleyball Federation’s (FIVB) watchful eye, just three nations have made the trip to the Congolese capital: Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and the hosts themselves. It’s a modest turnout, admittedly, but with fewer than four countries involved, organisers have applied a bespoke format to keep the tournament ticking over nicely.

The men’s competition will feature all three nations battling it out, whilst the women’s event sees Cameroon square off against Congo.

Proceedings get underway this afternoon, with the Cameroonian women taking on their Congolese counterparts at noon, before the men’s tournament kicks off at 2 pm as Congo face the Central African Republic.

The whole thing wraps up on Wednesday with the finals, the women’s decider scheduled for noon before the men’s top two clash at 2 pm to crown the first-ever Zone 4 champions.
