  • Coton Sport is winning a third consecutive league title – the fourth time they have achieved this fairy tale.
  • Coton Sport will represent Cameroon at the CAF Champions League.
  • Canon of Yaounde will have to wait for another season to end their more than two decades league title drought.

  • Emmanuel Mahop of Canon emerged as top scorer with 16 goals.

Coton Sport of Garoua has emerged as the champions of the 2022/23 MTN Elite one season, after a 2-0 win over rivals, Canon Sportif of Yaounde at the Douala Reunification Stadium.

Goals from Daman Bouba and Patience Wassou ensured all three points for the Cotonites, as they clinch a third consecutive crown.

Coton Sport had a better chance to win the title, as oppose to the other two contenders: Bamboutos and Canon. The boys of Coach Jean Besseck needed only a draw against the team that beat them twice in the first phase of the championship.

Bamboutos of Mbouda did their job in the first game of the day as they thrash Gazelle 4-1, but had to hope for a Canon win to be crown champions.

The Mekok Me Ngounda started the game on a fine foot – hoping to get a treble win over Coton in a single season for the first time in their history. The boys of Coach Aboubakar Souleymanou squandered chances in front of goal in the first minutes of the game.

Poor Passing from the Canon midfield, as top scorer Emmanuel Mahop couldn’t get the feeds to punish the Coton defence.

Poor Communication between the Canon goalkeeper and his defence – opened the way for Coton Sport to open scores through Daman Bouba.

The momentum of the 10-time champions slowed down as the game ended 1-0 at the interval.

The Cotonites look a better side in the second half as Patience Wassou doubled the lead for the defending champions, to put the game beyond reach for the Mekok Me Ngounda.

This is Coton Sport’s third consecutive elite one title, and this is the fourth time they are winning the title three times in a roll. The first two were between 2003 and 2008, while the third was between 2013 and 2015.

Previous Elite One Champions

This is their 18th league title – more than any other team in the division.

Coton Sport will represent Cameroon at next season’s CAChampionsns League, while the winners of the Cup of Cameroon will represent the country at the CAF Confederation Cup.
