Epic Beach Volleyball Battles on Olembe Sands as Double A Duo and Team Grace Claim Championship Crowns

The sands of the Yaounde Olembe Sports Complex witnessed a spectacular conclusion to the CocaBeach Stop #3 on Sunday, as the sport’s finest athletes battled it out in exciting finals.

Women’s Final: Team Grace Claim Championship Glory

In the women’s competition, it was Team Grace who emerged triumphant, capping off a remarkable tournament run that saw them overcome the defending champions in what many are calling a “final before the final.”

The duo, fresh from their CAVB Zone 4 championship victory in Bangui last July, entered the competition as regional champions but faced an uphill battle from the start. Placed in Pool B, they kicked off with back-to-back victories against YENDE/DONGMO and ETETI/MBESNE, only to stumble against ESSEN/EMMANUELLA, finishing second in their group.

However, it was in the knockout stages where Team Grace truly found their rhythm. They dispatched the previously unbeaten pair MENGUE/WONDJA in the quarter-finals, setting up a mouth-watering semi-final clash with reigning Cameroon champions NZALI Mamba and DANG Chantal.

The semi-final proved to be the match of the tournament. After dropping the opening set 21-11, Team Grace showed tremendous character to level the match with a commanding 21-5 victory in the second set, before edging a heartbreaking tie-break 15-10.

Championship Decider Proves One-Sided Affair

By contrast, Sunday’s final against KENFACK/MBALLA proved a rather more straightforward affair for the newly-crowned champions. Team Grace controlled proceedings from start to finish, securing a comfortable 2-0 victory with set scores of 21-15 and 21-10.

The victory was particularly sweet given KENFACK’s impressive semi-final performance against ABOA/AYANGMA, which had many tipping them as potential champions.

Men’s Competition: Double A Complete Yaoundé Double

In the men’s draw, the story belonged to the aptly-nicknamed “Double A” partnership of ABBA GAMBO and ADJI MAHAMAT, who completed a stunning double by adding the Yaoundé crown to their Stop 1 victory from July.

Under the guidance of coach BILOA Ghislain, the pair dominated their pool, finishing top of Group A ahead of the experienced duo MBONGUE/NSANGOU. Their path to the final saw them systematically dismantle quality opposition, seeing off NJONGA/SOLLE in the quarter-finals and DJAM/DAMBE in the semi-finals.

Epic Final Delivers Championship Drama

Sunday’s men’s final proved to be everything beach volleyball fans could have hoped for, with ABBA/ADJI and MBONGUE/NSANGOU serving up a memory show that had the Olembe crowd roaring their approval.

The “Double A” duo looked to be cruising after taking the opening set 21-15, but their experienced opponents had other ideas. MBONGUE and NSANGOU fought back magnificently to edge a marathon second set 26-24, setting up a winner-takes-all decider.

The tie-break proved just as tense, with both pairs trading points before ABBA and ADJI finally sealed victory 15-10, sparking wild celebrations from their supporters.

Star Performances Light Up Championship Weekend

Individual performances throughout the weekend caught the eye, with the crowd saliving over the epic duel between “SuperMBONGUE” and “MonsterABBA” – the latter earning widespread recognition as the early-season MVP.

The tournament was a testament to the growing strength of beach volleyball in Cameroon, with several emerging partnerships demonstrating that the future of beach volleyball is bright.

Championship Success Builds Momentum

With both champions having convincingly secured their titles, attention now turns to the remainder of the season, where new challenges lie ahead.
