FIFA WC, Qatar 2022: Saudis End Argentina’s 36 Game Unbeaten Streak.

  • Saudi Arabia is the first non European team to beat Argentina in the world cup after Cameroon in 1990.
  • The defeat for Argentina is their first defeat since they lost to Brazil in the 2019 Copa America final.
  • Argentina has suffered  one of the biggest defeat in World Cup history after England defeat to USA in 1950 and West Germany losing to Algeria in 1982.

Saudi Arabia has produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2022 World Cup with a 2-1 win over favourites Argentina in their group C opener in Lusail.

Salem Al Dawsari scored the winner to give the Green Falcons their biggest win in the FIFA World Cup.

The Saudis, Ranked 51st in the world rankings – showed resilience against two-time champions Argentina – although things looked impossible when Lionel Messi scored from the spot before Argentina had three goals ruled out for offside.

The Saudis looked more resilient and determined in the second half as Saleh Al Shehri levelled matters with a low effort and Salem Al Dawsari scored Saudi Arabia’s historic winning goal to put the group-wide open.

The defeat of Argentina means their 36 games unbeaten run finally came to an end.

Argentina plays Mexico in their next game on Saturday while the Saudis take on Poland.
